Cadet Sponsorship Program

GMVB believes that there is scope of sustain and enhance the medium to long-term returns on GMVB’s portfolio by active management of its diverse range of investment portfolio.

Apart from capital allocation and financial returns, active portfolio management will also be driven by greater involvement of GMVB in facilitating the development of certain critical aspects of the maritime industry. two immediate key areas have been identified by GMVB which are to strengthen and further develop the role of GMVB to support training if seafarers by providing training berths and to promote smart partnership and strengthen links between business, education, research and innovation, and to promote Bumiputra entrepreneurship by supporting key industry initiatives.

At the national level, it is crucial to focus on developing both capabilities and ensure a sufficient supply of qualified and suitably trained seafarers in Malaysia. Market study has shown that the current professional undergraduates/training courses in Malaysia have not adequately prepared our young graduates for a seagoing career due to lack of training berths, ensuring the supply of skilled seafarers to meet the demand for competent officers for the Malaysian merchant shipping industry remains a primary calling for Malaysia.

Active portfolio management can also be executed through actions that could potentially increase GMVB’s visibility in the industry. GMVB’s developmental role could be further strengthened through increased participation and contribution in key industry initiatives. For example, GMVB can provide more onboard training opportunities by providing more training berths by making it a requirement for its local partners to provide these training berths.

We at GMVB would like to upgrade skills and ensure a steady supply of seafarers to meet the demand for competent officers in the maritime industry. We have collaborated with AkademiLaut Malaysia (ALAM) and as part of our corporate social responsibility objective, and provided scholarships to the ‘seafarerrs-to-be’ who have positive mindset and attitude and possess a strong desire to take up a challenge as sea.
